The new Citylink route from Castlebar to Dublin begins on Monday, September 25.
A WEST Mayo councillor has called on CityLink to reconsider their decision of not extending their Mayo to Dublin bus service to Westport.
The CityLink operated bus service from Castlebar to Dublin Airport was launched in September 2023 with stops along the route in Claremorris, Tuam, Athlone and Dublin city. The service is accessible seven days a week with six return journeys per day.
The service has been considered a huge success with the public but despite repeated calls from public representatives to extend the service to Westport it has yet to occur.
The matter was raised at the monthly meeting of the Westport/Belmullet Municipal District where Westport-based councillor Brendan Mulroy questioned the logic of not extending the service to Westport.
“We were told the bus from Dublin Airport will be coming to Westport but I have been told it is not. I wrote to the company and they said no,” he commented.
“We have a brand new dual carriage and we are about reducing our carbon footprint. But you will have to get a taxi to Castlebar to get on the bus to Dublin airport. There is not much joined up thinking there.
“Don't get me wrong the bus is a fantastic service to Dublin Airport and is the way to travel but there is no point if you are from Westport or Louisburgh and having to go to Castlebar to get the bus,” he said.

The Fianna Fáil councillor called on the management of the Westport/Belmullet Municipal District to write to the bus company and question them as to why the service does not go to Westport.
“That bus service needs to be brought to Westport and I would ask you to write to the bus provider to reconsider and bring the bus to Westport,” he concluded.
