Independent councillor John O'Malley
A Senior official with Mayo County Council has reassured Westport-based councillors that a slip road linking the Golf Course Road with the Westport Industrial estate will be part of a new extension of the industrial estate.
Head of the Westport/Belmullet Municipal District, Seamus Ó Mongáin told councillors at their monthly meeting that tender documents are nearly ready to go out to tender for the development of the estate and this will include a slip road. He added they hope work will commence in the middle of 2025.
Mr Ó Mongáin gave an update on the project after the slip road was raised by local councillor John O'Malley who questioned if council officials had made a fool of councillors after he claimed they promised that the slip road would be completed by now.
The development of a slip road linking the Golf Course Road near the old Berry's printing factory and the Westport Industrial estate was agreed in order to allay traffic concerns along the Golf Course Road following the development of 50 social houses.
The houses are expected to be completed in January but Cllr O'Malley said a sod has yet to be turned on the slip road and questioned if it will be completed.
“I have not seen anything happen and those houses will be ready for occupancy in January and there is nothing done with that relief road. He [Padraig Walsh, former head of the municipal district] promised there would be a slip road in through the industrial estate to get onto the N5 and I don't see a thing done.
“I want to know if he made a fool of us. I am sure the other councillors heard him say that the slip road would be done and there is nothing done. That was a good while ago and we haven't turned a sod,” he said.
Cllr O'Malley also raised concerns regarding the junction of the Golf Course Road and the Newport Road in Westport claiming that it was badly designed as large vehicles could not turn left safely. He claimed that vehicles have to mount the footpath in order to make the turn without crossing the centre line of the Newport Road and fears it will result in a collision.
Martin O'Grady, Senior Engineer with Mayo County Council said the council will take a look at the junction and see what can be done to make it safer.
