TOM Fadian, a stalwart of the Mayo Irish Farmers’ Association, is to be laid to rest in his native Achill.

Mr Fadian, who hailed from Slievemore, was synonymous with the Mayo IFA for numerous decades and was a long-time advocate for sheep farmers. He passed away surrounded by his family in the care of Mayo Hospice earlier this week.

Mayo IFA Chairman John Lynskey, who knew Mr Fadian for several years, told The Mayo News that he ‘was dedicated to the work of the organisation’,

Members of the IFA are to hold a guard of honour at his funeral service this evening (Friday).

“He always kept the hill sheep farmers to the forefront. We worked together on a lot of issues,” said Mr Lynskey, who served as Chairman of the IFA’s National Sheep Committee from 2014 to 2018.

Mr Fadian was active in his local community and served as a board member of the local community development company Comhlacht Forbartha Áitiúil Acla, until last year.

“Tom was very proactive, progressive and passionate about all things Achill, especially regarding creating employment opportunities, advocating for our youth and the Achill-Cleveland Twinning,” read a tribute from the board and staff of Comhlacht Forbartha Áitiúil Acla and the Achill Experience

“Tom’s passing leaves a huge void in our parish. He was a go-to man for history, and for advice on agricultural matters. He represented Achill’s farming community at local, county and national level through his involvement with the IFA.

“He was a very patient man and was very generous with his time and his consul. You will be sorely missed Tom. Rest in Peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.”

Tom Fadian is survived by his wife Fiona, children, Stephen, John, Cora, Sarah, Conor and Roisin, daughters-in-law Diana, Jayne, and Neda, son-in-law Adam, eleven grandchildren, his sister Mary and brother John, Aunt Mary, sisters-in-law Ann, Brenda and Mary-Jo, brothers-in-law Rory and Vince, nieces, nephews and his many relatives, neighbours and friends.

He will be reposing in Lavelles Funeral Home, Cashel, Achill (F28 YO H9) on this evening (Friday) from 4.30pm until 6.30pm with removal to the Church of the Assumption, Dookinella, arriving at 7pm.

His Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday morning at 11am with burial afterwards in Slievemore Cemetery.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
