WORLD bronze medal-winning athlete Oisín Joyce has been named U-20 Athlete of the Year at the 123.ie National Athletics Awards.
The Ballinrobe man became the Irish person to win a medal in the javelin event when he set a national record at the World Athletics U-20 Championships.
His 73.89m throw won him the bronze medal and a hero’s welcome in his native Ballinrobe. The 19-year-old is just the fifth Irish person to win a medal at the World Athletics U-20 Championships.
Joyce fought off competition for the award from fellow nominees Elizabeth Ndudi (Dundrum South Dublin AC), Fintan Dewhirst (Tir Chonaill AC) and European Under 18 hammer throw champion Thomas Williams (Shercock AC).
Speaking to The Mayo News at his homecoming in Ballinrobe back in September, Joyce said he would be ‘definitely looking for more’ medals in the future.
