The road towards the Blue Flag beach in Mulranny
A WEST Mayo community has organised a petition to try to force Mayo County Council to improve pedestrian access to the local Blue Flag beach.
The online petition created by members of the community in the seaside village of Mulranny is calling for safer and user-friendly pedestrian access to the beach via the Cushlecka/Currane road.
The campaigners claim that the current pathway to Mulranny beach and pier from the village is via steps and a causeway across the road from the Mulranny Park Hotel and remains unsuitable and unsafe for families with pushchairs or with a disability.
The petition created on the change.org website has 176 signatures to date with a target set at 200. The petition reads: “By creating a safe, user-friendly pedestrian path that links up with access to the approach road to the beach, from the village footpaths to the national school, we can ensure that everyone in our community, regardless of their physical abilities, can access and enjoy these natural and recreational spaces. Let's advocate for a more inclusive and user-friendly community.
“The current pathway to Mulranny Blue Flag Beach and pier remains unsuitable and unsafe for families with pushchairs, as well as physically or visually impaired individuals. Around 15 percent of the world's population lives with some form of disability, according to the World Bank, suggesting that a large potential user base is being prohibited from fully utilising and enjoying these public amenities.
“We hereby call upon the relevant authorities to review and address this pressing issue promptly. Your support can help shape an inclusive future for our community and visitors to our beautiful holiday location. Please sign this petition and spread the word,” the petition stated.
