Restrictions put on 20 Mayo beaches following Storm Lilian

Old Head Beach in Louisburgh is among the restricted beaches

Restrictions have been put in place at 20 beaches across Mayo due to Storm Lilian water pollution.

The restrictions came due to risks of elevated bacteria levels following last week’s weather conditions.

The notice sets out the following precautionary measures to water users:

  • Avoid swallowing or splashing water
  • Wash your hands before handling food
  • Avoid swimming with an open cut or wound
  • Avoid swimming if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system.

The alerts were issued before Storm Lilian on Thursday, August 22, and are in place until this Wednesday, August 28.

  • Bertra Beach, Murrisk
  • Mullaghroe Beach, Belmullet
  • Elly Bay, Belmullet
  • Golden Strand, Achill Island
  • Dugort Beach, Achill Island
  • Rinroe Beach,
  • Ross Beach, Killala
