MAYO County Council did not deliver any new social housing in the first quarter of 2024, according to newly-released figures by the Department of Housing.

The majority of 75 social housing tenancies commenced by Mayo County Council this year have been through HAP (42) and RAS (10) while 17 were delivered through short-term leasing.

In the first three months of 2024, the local authority acquired six houses and completed nine affordable purchases houses, seven of which were through the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant.

Earlier this year, the council came under fire for delivering 291 houses over a five year period, including 61 new builds in 2023.

Mayo County Council aims to deliver over 1,000 social houses by the end of 2026 under the Housing For All Plan, including 157 in 2024.

Official opening

Earlier this month, Minister of State Alan Dillon, TD, officially opened a 22-unit social housing development at Lios na Circe in Castlebar. A contractor is currently on site at a 20-unit social housing development in Achill Sound.

The council did not deliver any units under the Repair and Leasing Scheme in Q1 of 2024. The local authority currently has 27 active leases under the scheme, which provides grant funding to property owners to refurbish houses which they must then lease to the council for a specified period.

Mayo County Council has 22 applications outstanding for 75 units under the Repair and Leasing Scheme.

At the end of June, there were 1,873 households in Mayo supported under HAP and RAS, which subsidise rents via direct payments to landlords. This represents a drop in the 1,927 households supported under the schemes by the end of 2023.

Mayo County Council has approved 344 grants under the Croí Cónaithe scheme, which provides funding to repair vacant and derelict properties. Thirty such grants have been issued by the local authority.

Thirteen of the country’s 31 local authorities did not deliver any new-build social houses in the first three months of the year.

A total of 158 new-build social houses were built by 18 local authorities up until the end of March.
