Stakeholder group launches co-fund for Croagh Patrick maintenance

‘Friends of the Reek’ has been launched by the Croagh Patrick Stakeholders Group to maintain the mountains path

The Reek Sunday pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick may well have been postponed last weekend. However, Longford man Willie Healy was among those who completed the climb.

The initiative was launched by Chairperson of Croagh Patrick Stakeholders Group, Mr Martin Keating

The Croagh Patrick Stakeholders Group has launched ‘Friends of the Reek’, an initiative to co-fund the future maintenance of the path on Croagh Patrick.

The Sustainable Access and Habitat Restoration Project on Croagh Patrick was recently completed, having been over eight years in the making with collaboration from local interest and supported by the Department of Community and Rural Development and Mayo County Council.

It has been an epic journey driven by a passion to deal with the significant erosion on Croagh Patrick, a problem that the orgnisation solved by ‘putting the mountain and its care at the centre’ of their thoughts and action.

With the path work completed and signs of good vegetation recovery on the eroded areas, attention has now turned to maintaining the path’s condition. This includes clearing cross drains, removing cobble from the path, and keeping the revetment walls that support the steps in good condition.

The Friends of the Reek initiative is an opportunity for people to show their support for the restoration project by donating online on the Croagh Patrick website

There is also the opportunity for local businesses to provide support and become a supporter or partner.

The Sustainable Access and Habitat Restoration Project has put Croagh Patrick, the mountain that people have come to for healing for centuries, in a good place to heal itself.

The Croagh Patrick stakeholders group ‘strongly encourage’ the support for the initiative so that the mountain never reaches such a never ‘scarred, eroded and uncared’ state again.

The official website for the initiative will launch on Wednesday July 3,  at 5pm Westport Townhall, all are welcome to attend.
