Dillon welcomes record commencement of houses in Mayo in April

Mayo Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon has welcomed the record number of homes commencements in April in Mayo

Mayo TD and Minister of State, Alan Dillon has welcomed data which shows that construction started on record 104 new homes in Mayo during April.

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has published its monthly data on the number of Commencement Notices (residential construction starts) for April 2024 showing that 104 new homes were started in County Mayo during the month.

The data also shows that in the first four months of 2024, there have been commencement notices for 265 homes in Co Mayo, an increase on the same period in 2023 (44 homes) and a record for the period since the data series began in 2015.

Minister of State for Planning and Local Government, Alan Dillon welcomed the announcement saying that homes coming on stream showcase strong Government commitment to improving housing availability.

“The latest data demonstrates substantial numbers of housing commencements in Mayo and across the country. Nationally, 30,138 homes have commenced in 2024, and these new homes represent a new start and a bright future for those individuals, couples, and families.

“The First Home scheme, initiated in July 2022, and the Help to Buy Scheme, which has assisted 46,875 individuals and families since its inception by Fine Gael in 2017, are clear contributors to the progress made in housing.

“We have also seen significant success with the introduction of the development charges waiver and the water connection charges refund scheme which has reduced house building costs by an average of €12,500 per home. This substantial saving has boosted the delivery of new housing supply and addressed cost and viability issues faced by the construction sector.

“However, we are aware that there's no magic wand to instantly solve the housing challenges we face. A comprehensive, multi-faceted approach is necessary,” he said.
