CASTLEBAR Mitchels football Patrick Durcan will captain the Mayo senior footballers again in 2024, Mayo manager Kevin McStay has announced.

Durcan retains the captaincy for the coming season, having previously held the role in 2023 with Tommy Conroy and Stephen Coen as vice-captains in a year that saw Mayo beaten by a rampant Dublin team in the All-Ireland Quarter-Final.

Last year, Durcan had the honour of becoming the second Mayo man in five seasons to captain his county to a Division 1 league title after Mayo defeated Galway in the league decider.

The wing-back will now lead Mayo out against Galway in their National Football League Division 1 opener in Salthill on January 28.

The 29-year-old made his senior debut against Kerry on February 1, 2015, and has since scored 1-74 in all competitions. In 2019, he won an All-Star for his exploits that season, which ended with a heavy All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Dublin.

Mayo started the 2024 season with a seven-goal win in a charity match followed by a first-ever loss to London in the FBD League Quarter-Final, with a performance that left Manager Kevin McStay disappointed.
