The event will take place on February 11 in Turlough Park.
The Turlough 8km Fun Run and Walk race is back and it promises to be better than ever.
The popular event, which is organised by Mayo Mental Health Association and Parke Keelogues Crimlin GAA club, will take place on Sunday, February 11. Last year saw a record turnout and it is set to be even bigger this year. It is open to any age, young and old alike, and will start at 12 noon from Turlough House.
The run side of the event is registered with Athletics Ireland and is set to attract some of the top talent in the county; while the walk side will contain a virtual element for those further afield who would like to take part.
Mayo Mental Health Association promotes positive mental health and wellbeing to all individuals and communities throughout the county and further afield. They provide support to people who experience mental health difficulties, and aids their journey towards recovery.
Their vision is for Mayo to be a place where mental health is valued and supported as an essential part of everyone’s health so that individuals, friends, and families can thrive within the community.
The association's unique ‘4 Pillar approach’ aims to make this possible, focusing on promoting, supporting and educating where possible. One very important aspect of this approach is the Mayo Schools Education Programme.
In a 2013 study by Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, it was found that by the age of 13, one in three young people in Ireland are likely to have experienced some type of mental disorder, and by the age of 24, the rate will have increased to over one in two.
The Schools Education Programme helps deliver, support and apply evidence based education, such as Mind Out, Breathe and Fractured, to students across Mayo. Schools play a very important role in the promotion of students’ positive mental health and high quality implementation is critical to the overall success of this programme.
Its host, the National Museum of Ireland at Turlough Park, says they are “delighted” to host the popular run.
The money raised on the day will also go to supporting Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin GAA club, alongside funding different community projects amd mental health initiatives across Mayo county.
If you wish to participate, you can register here, or on morning of the event.
