AT THE HELM Director of Glenamaddy Players and chairperson of Drama League of Ireland, Coman Keavny.
AFTER sweeping success at the All Ireland Drama Festival Awards last year with their play ‘Proof’, by David Ackburn, The Glenamaddy Players are returning to Westport. This Saturday, January 20, at 8pm, they will stage their new production ‘The Outgoing Tide’, written by Bruce Graham, in Westport Town Hall Theatre.
The play – directed by Glenamaddy stalwart Coman Keavny – centres on Gunner, the former owner of a small trucking company who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. His concerned wife, Peg, hopes to get him into an assisted living facility but Gunner, who has stretches of great lucidity, is completely resistant to the idea. Peg turns to their son, Jack to help her.
Jack has his own problems, however. He’s in the midst of divorce proceedings, concerned about his dysfunctional teenage son, and is still chafing from his own childhood that was marked by his father’s relentless teasing and his mother’s conflicting tales.
The play shows how Gunner becomes determined to take control of his own fate, make peace with Jack, and win over Peg and make his ultimate wish materialise. This is a poignant play about illness, death and making peace with personal choice.
The Glenamaddy Players have been on the theatre circuit for over 50 years. With a team of talented actors and a skilled and dedicated crew, the group has enjoyed huge success over the years. They made their debut in Westport back in 2022 to a sell-out audience when they performed ‘The Cripple of Inishmaan’, by Martin McDonagh. ‘The Outgoing Tide’ is their third production at the Theatre.
