The first road traffic victim of 2024 was named locally as Terence Killeen from Redhill, Tulrahan, Claremorris

The victim of a road traffic collision between Hollymount and Claremorris on Friday morning has been named as 38-year-old Terence Killeen from Redhill, Tulrahan, Claremorris.

The road traffic collision occurred between two vehicles on the R311 road between Claremorris and Hollymount at approximately 7.45am on Friday morning.

It is understood that Mr Killeen, who worked as a Design Engineer with McHale Engineering in Ballinrobe was on his way to work at the time of the impact.

Emergency services rushed to the scene to tend to Mr Killeen who was seriously injured and was pronounced dead at the scene. A female who was in the second vehicle was transferred to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar with non-life threatening injuries.

Mr Killeen is the first person to die on the roads in Mayo in 2024 and is survived by his parents Tom and Mary; his sister Maria and her husband David, niece Caragh, relatives, colleagues, neighbours and a wide circle of friends. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

The road was closed to traffic to allow a technical examination of the scene to be completed by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Diversions were put in place during the day.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R331 between Claremorris and Hollymount between 7.30am and 8am are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Meanwhile the driver of a tractor who was seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision in Ballinrobe on Thursday morning remains in the Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. The male sustained serious injuries including head injuries when his tractor collided with a van on the Castlebar Road in Ballinrobe around 7.15am. He was transferred from Mayo University Hospital to Beaumont Hospital on Thursday afternoon and remains in a critical condition.
