WESTPORT United have advanced to the last 64 of the FAI Junior Cup after a convincing win over Sligo outfit Cartron United.

Goals from Darren Browne and Kevin Ketterick made the difference on a day when the margin of victory could have been much wider for Kevin McNamara's men.

With the number of shots they missed or saw batted away, by the end it was only a question of how big the win would be for United.

Indeed, Carrton were lucky to hold the deadlock for as long as they did before the impressive Fionn O’Hara gave a lovely pass to Browne, who finished it sublimely from outside the box with his first touch.

O’Hora and Browne were the bedrock of United’s victory at midfield while Kevin Ketterick was consistently causing trouble out on the wings.

Any chats their opponents did get away were easily dealt with by their captain Gary Cunningham, who rarely broke a sweat all afternoon.

Kevin McNamara’s men continued to hold the lion’s share of possession and chances until Ketterick sealed the deal with a finish in the 80th minute after taking a lovely cross from substitute Jack Dawson.

There will be a full report plus reaction from Westport United captain Gary Cunningham in Tuesday’s print edition of The Mayo News.
