TWENTY houses in Castlebar were delivered by Co-operative Housing Ireland (CHI) last year.

According to its 2022 Annual Report, the houses in Humbert Close were among 34 in Connacht built by the Approved Housing Body.

The houses are located just outside Castlebar, close to amenities and near Mayo University Hospital, ATU Mayo, Mayo County Council’s head office, the local fire brigade and Garda Barracks.

The development was delivered in partnership with Mayo County Council, the Department of Housing, and the Housing Finance Agency, with local builder Martin Moran.

CHI Member Miranda Kearney moved into her new home in Humbert Close with her son Jax. Discussing life in her new home, Miranda said: “I’m happy to have a safe and secure place especially knowing that this is Jax’s forever home and where all his firsts will take place. It’s really exciting and such a relief knowing our home is secure. I’m so grateful, it’s just mad.”

CHI delivered 463 in total in 2022, including 341 in Munster and 88 in Leinster.

Speaking at the launch held at an event in Buswells Hotel, Molesworth Street, Dublin 2, CHI Chairperson, Pearse O’Shiel, said: “CHI welcomed its 4,000th family into our co-operative community in 2022.  We are very proud that as of 2022 more than 12,500 people across Ireland call a CHI house or apartment ‘their home for life’.  We will build upon this strong foundation for the future and continue to play our part in satisfying the increasing housing output needs in Ireland.”

Also speaking at the launch, CHI’s CEO, Kieron Brennan, said, the body were on track for a record-breaking year in 2023’ by delivering over 700 houses.

CHI’s member tenants are part of a local co-operative, allowing them a real say, concrete input into decisions affecting their estates and communities.

Therefore, member tenants can shape their community and nominate people to be elected to CHI’s Board thereby influencing the direction of Co-operative Housing Ireland as an organisation.
