THE seven-club alliance of St Ciaran’s have made history by winning their first adult county title in Westport today.

Barely a few months into their formation, a team made of players from Ballina, Gaeltacht Iorrais, Ballyvary, Claremorris, Caiseal Gaels, Westport and Moytura claimed the Mayo Senior B Hurling Championship title in a game that was entertaining from start to finish.

A inspirational 12-point display from Ballina man Luke Hurley was key as Mitchels found themselves too dependant on Ryan Butler, who finished with 0-10 (8 frees and 1 ’65).

The game ebbed and flowed right from the throw-in and produced a goal after only six minutes when Castlebar's Colm Enright finished opportunistically after Kevin Duffy stopped Bernard Kennedy’s point attempt from going over the bar.

That score left Mitchels two in front, but Westport replied with two scores form Luke Hurley and a single from Matthew Connor.

Mitchels had some needless wides but cancelled out some fabulous St Ciaran's scores through points from Ryan Butler and Colm Enright.

That left scores 1-7 to 0-9 in Mitchels favour at half-time.

The teams were level twice in the opening seven minutes before St Ciaran's began to creep away after a hat-trick of points from Luke Hurley – who was ably assisted by six points from James Gallagher, Kealan Gallagher and Matthew Conor.

Mitchels were held to just 1-5 from play in the entire game by a rock-solid defensive display from St Ciaran's who ran out deserved two-point winners.

There will be a full report plus reaction from the St Ciaran’s camp in Tuesday’s print edition of The Mayo News.
