CLAREMORRIS tore up the pages of history and wrote their own as they saw off St Brigids in the Junior county final with eighteen to spare.

Having been beaten by the North Mayo alliance by five points in the group stages, the champions blew the favourites out of the water with 2-8 in the first half.

St Brigids’ forwards, who had scored 5-63 in the championship so far, were held to just one point from their captain Louise Fogarty.

Although their march slowed in second half, Claremorris continued to press forward.

Corner forward Ashleagh Sammon was their leading light, scoring 1-7 in 59 minutes.

With 24 goals scored in the championship already, it was little surprise that Claremorris found the net twice in the first half.

Their first green flag came when Alana Fitzpatrick played in Rebecca Kean who delivered a calm finish in the 16th minute.

Shane Breslin’s ladies then shot themselves thirteen points ahead on the stroke of half-time when Nina Wallace assisted the outstanding Ashleagh Sammon for their second goal.

St Brigids kept their chins up and won an early second-half penalty which Ava McDonnell saw saved by Claire Keane.

Claremorris hit the crossbar twice and scored 0-8 in a second half where Ashleagh Sammon was the star of the show as the South Mayo women won their second ever Junior A county title.

There will be a full report plus reaction from the Claremorris camp in Tuesday’s print edition of The Mayo News.
