THE Chairman of Westport Horse Fair is appealing to horse owners across Mayo to support one of Ireland oldest fairs this Saturday.

Paddy Joe Foy is calling on owners of horses, donkeys and ponies to support the Westport Horse Fair, which dates back to 1741.

The fair returned to the Mall last year after a three-year hiatus last year and was well-attended despite inclement weather conditions on the day.

Owners of foul, sheep, vintage cars and machinery are also welcome to lend their support to the centuries-old fair to keep the tradition going.

“Without their support we won’t have any fair,” Mr Foy told The Mayo News.

The horse fair will take place on the South Mall and will coincide with Westport Heritage Day, which will feature a diverse display of old machinery, cars and other items.

Parking will be available along the North Mall for the event, which commences at 10.30am on Saturday, October 14.

Attractions will include a threshing display, the smallest cow in Ireland, a mobile forge, basket making as well as a sheepdog demonstration from Jim Prenty. Music will be provided by Charlie Keating.

All stewards for the fair are requested to assemble at 8.30am on Saturday morning.

Mr Foy has extended his thanks to local county councillors Brendan Mulroy, John O’Malley, Christy Hyland and Peter Flynn, Westport Horse Show, Mayo County Council, An Garda Síochána and local residents for their support of this historic show.

Anyone interested in supporting the Westport Horse Fair can contact Paddy Joe Foy on 087 655 3005.
