Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar
KIDNEY dialysis patients could soon be able to undergo dialysis treatment in the comfort of their own home in a move designed to reduce pressure on hospitals.
Mayo University Hospital (MUH) has 74 patients currently undergoing weekly kidney dialysis, while another six patients from Mayo travel to Galway University Hospital for their treatment.
A meeting of the HSE Regional Health Forum West heard that demand for renal dialysis has ‘increased significantly’ across the region.
Ann Cosgrove, Chief Operations Officer with the Saolta University Health Care Group, explained that the HSE is looking at increasing capacity in hospitals and at rolling out home dialysis services.
“We have been granted an allocation of nursing staff CNSs (clinical nurse specialists) to try to develop home dialysis. A big part of that is education and educating the patient, and making sure the patient is comfortable and able to work with the home dialysis,” she said.
The issue of renal dialysis was raised by Independent Castlebar-based councillor Michael Kilcoyne, who is a member of the health forum. He asked why MUH cannot cater for all the patients from Mayo who require dialysis.
In response, Ms Cosgrove said that due to the increased demand for renal dialysis services it is intended to increase the Mayo service from three to five days a week.
“There are currently six patients travelling to Galway for kidney dialysis treatment, and we hope to have 1-2 of these patients returning to Mayo University Hospital for dialysis in the coming week,” she stated.
