A man in his 60s is in a critical condition following an assault in Westport.
The incident occurred at around 1.20am this morning, following an altercation on High Street.
A man in his 20s has been arrested and is being questioned by gardaí.
RTÉ reports that the injured man is understood to be originally from Co Roscommon, but has been living in the Westport area for some time. He is being treated at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar.
Garda Forensic teams are carrying out an examination of the scene this morning.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them.
Any pedestrians or road users who were in the vicinity of High Street between 1am and 2am this morning and who may have camera footage is asked to make this available to investigating gardaí.
