Ireland West Airport Knock
KNOCK Airport weather station endured its wettest summer since 2012 this year.
The hilltop station recorded a colossal 435.2 mm of rain throughout June, July and August , 147 percent of its Long-Term Average (LTA) monthly rainfall.
According to Met Éireann’s Climate Statement for Summer and August 2023, the country recorded its warmest June on record but also its wettest ever July.
Knock Airport had the joint highest number of wet days in June and July, with 75 in total. It also had the highest number of ‘very wet days’ (17) where rainfall is 10.0mm or greater.
However, in keeping with national trend, Knock Airport recorded its warmest summer on record, averaging 14.6 °C.
Weather stations in Knock, Newport and Belmullet all recorded more rainfall and higher temperatures than the average for the same period from 1981-2010.
Recorded rainfall at Belmullet was 127 percent of its LTA while Newport was 131 percent.
Meanwhile, the three stations all recorded above average temperatures.
Belmullet was 1.5 °C above average, just ahead of Newport (1.2 °C) Knock Airport (1.1 °C).
However, the Belmullet station also recorded the lowest monthly sunshine total with 99.5 hours of sunshine.
Claremorris also recorded its warmest summer since 1995, with temperatures averaging 15.4 °C (1.2 °C above its LTA).
