Renowned cellist and Newport resident Patrick Dexter brings his awe-inspiring talent to the stage in Westport for one night only this Friday, August 18, at 8pm.
Patrick will be performing his unique blend of classical and Irish folk music that have made him become one of the world’s best known cellists.
Patrick grew up in Dublin learning cello with Damien Rice’s cellist Vyvienne Long where he developed a lifelong passion for challenging expectations for the classic instrument. He now lives and records music in Mayo where he collaborates with musicians like Oscar winning singer-songwriter Markéta Irglová and award winning Irish harpist Alannah Thornburgh.
Over the past few years, Patrick’s music videos became much-needed comfort for countless people all over the world, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. He began uploading videos of himself playing cello by his home, a tiny old stone cottage near Newport surrounded by immense amounts of nature, and quickly became an online global sensation watched by millions.
The concert will include music from Patrick’s debut album ‘Solace’ released in 2022 which became one of the highest selling albums in its genre in the the US and Canadian album charts, asserting his place as one of the world’s best known cello players.
In addition to the popular arrangements that have made him a global sensation online, Patrick also brings new original melodies and songs that touch something old and enduring. His performances are an unmissable experience that weave storytelling with classical, pop, folk and Irish traditional music, all expressed with the cello’s uniquely resonant voice.
