Planning permission refused for Swinford Biogas plant

Planning permission has been refused for a proposed bio-gas plant in Swinford. The application by Moy Valley Biogas Ltd to construct a facility at Lislackagh and Carrowbaun outside the town was turned down by Mayo County Council after 433 submissions were made by people in the locality.

The developers said the proposed facility would produce biogas and fertiliser pellets from manure or slurry and various types of grass. However, the proposal met with strong local opposition and the Swinford Biogas Concern Group held a number of well-attended meetings in the town where a large number of speakers contributed.

The group were at pains to state they weren't opposed to a biogas plant but were objecting strongly to the proposed location.

Planning permission for the plant was refused this week on six grounds.
