“It’s absolutely massive" - Westport woman ready to cheer on 'Girls in Green' at World Cup

Lisa Tully from Westport says she's ‘buzzing and excited’ about the FIFA Women's World Cup

“It’s not often you get to join up work and go to see the World Cup.”

WESTPORT will be represented at the FIFA Women’s World Cup tomorrow (Thursday) by one one of their own, who will be in the stands for the biggest game in the history of Irish women’s soccer.

Lisa Tully, who is a senior digital marketing and media manager with Life Style Sports, will be among tens of thousands of Irish people Down Under cheering on the Irish against Australia.

Over 80,000 people will throng into Stadium Australia in Sydney for Ireland’s sold-out World Cup opener against the host nation, with the Aussies going in as slight favourites.

Speaking to The Mayo News from Dublin Airport shortly before boarding her flight to Dubai, Ms Tully said she’s ‘buzzing and excited’ to get the chance to see the 'Girls In Green' in World Cup action.

The Westport native will be flat out interviewing fans and creating social media content to capture the historic occasion for those who cannot be there.

“I think it’s a massive opportunity for, I suppose, the girls first of all, playing in their first ever World Cup. So I’m so excited to see them, and hopefully it’d be great if they could really do well in that kind of group of death, as they call it,” said Ms Tully.

“From a business side in Life Style Sports, I suppose, I’m excited as well too. We want to bring what we can from the energy and content to our social channels. It’s a massive opportunity for both the Life Style Sports perspective and of course from a personal perspective.”

Hit song

Her employer has already scored a hit with their partnership with singer-songwriter Mick Konstantin, whose song ‘Girls In Green’ has already gotten over half a million views across their social channels.

Ms Tully, who plays Gaelic football with Westport, said it’s her ‘dream job’ to work in sport and marketing.

“It’s not often you get to join up work and go to see the World Cup,” she said.

“So I’ve been following the girls on their journey to the World Cup. Football is a big part of our business and empowering women in sport, so it was a massive opportunity for us.

“I’m obviously delighted from a personal point of view as well, getting to cheer on the Girls In Green.”

Before flying out she was also busy getting in touch with friends Down Under sussing out the best meeting places ahead of the big clash with Australia.

“It’s absolutely massive to have that sort of attendance [80,000] at a women’s game for the opening game so the atmosphere I’d say will be electric. We’re very lucky to have tickets and to be going to that to cheer on the girls,” she said.
