Mayo footballers Rory Brickenden and Fionn McDonagh with Pauline Golden and Bríd Chambers at the launch of Relay for Life, which takes place in Westport on May 20 and 21.
Relay for life is a global event which celebrates and remembers those who have and are fighting cancer. The first relay for life event in Westport will take place over the weekend of May 20 and 21.
Teams can walk, run, skip, dance around a circuit, in Westport’s case, The Mall, over a 24- hour period divided up between team members. Rest tents, refreshments and some great live entertainment will be available to encourage the participants and their supporters throughout the event. There will also be all sorts of activities and games at the venue with something for everyone. This is a perfect opportunity to bring colleagues, teams, friends and communities together to support a great cause.
There are so many ways to be part of this event; participate, donate, be a volunteer on the day, join a team, be part of the candle ceremony or simply provide moral support for the teams on the day.
To participate: hop online now https://relayforlife.ie/event/westport to register a team or as an individual. Teams numbers can be expanded at any time. Whilst the event is hosted in Westport, the organisers would love to see teams from all over Mayo take part so this event is about the entire county.
To join the candle ceremony: Candle bags in support of the event will be available from participating shops in advance of the event and can also be bought online, through the event website or Facebook and at the event. These candle bags can be personalised by adding a name, a poem or photo. The bags will be a part of a heart-warming candle ceremony on Saturday evening and as darkness falls lighting the route to remind us that light is so much brighter when we come together.
To donate: All donations are welcome via https://relayforlife.ie/event/westport or through any member of the committee. There will also be local fundraising prior to the event, fundraising stalls at the event as well as donation buckets.
All money raised goes to the Irish Cancer Society which in turns funds critical services like Night Nursing, volunteer driver service, counselling sessions etc.
Please help spread the word about this debut event as the organisers hope to grow it to be an annual success. For more information check out Facebook and Instagram pages.
