GARDAÍ in Castlebar arrested two young males in connection with two separate seizures of substantial amounts of ecstasy tablets worth over €1,000, at the weekend.
The two incidents occurred on Spencer Street and on the Turlough Road last Friday night and Gardaí believe the ecstasy tablets were to be sold in the town over the weekend. Gardaí said both seizures were not planned operations and occurred because of good policing after a hunch from Gardaí on duty in their areas.
The quantity of ecstasy found on Spencer Street was worth approximately €1,000 and the person arrested was in his early twenties and was known to Gardaí for anti-social behaviour. The second person, arrested on the Turlough Road, was also in his early twenties but was not as well-known to the Gardaí. The quantity of drugs found on his person was lower and was believed to be worth in the value of €200-300.
“The problem with ecstasy is with it becoming so cheap you can buy a tablet for €3 and you won’t get a pint of Guinness for that. Young people are finding it much cheaper to get high on ecstasy than they would to get a few pints. It certainly is causing a problem,” said a Garda spokesperson.
