Mayo Senator claims €71,000 in expenses

Mayo Fine Gael Senator Paddy Burke was the third highest claimant of expenses for 2009, according to figures published at the weekend.
The Castlebar businessman claimed over €71,000, leaving him behind only Roscommon’s Terry Leydon and top claimant, Westhmeath senator Donie Cassidy.
Senator Cassidy claimed almost €87,000.
In total Senator Burke claimed €71,038 in expenses in 2009, which may also include expenses incurred during 2008. In addition to this he received €27,112 as a allowance for being deputy chair of the house. These payments and expenses are in addition to a basic salary of €70,134.
Mayo Fianna FΡil senator John Carty was at number 26 on the list, claiming expenses of over €51,000.
In total the 60 members of Seanad Eireann claimed almost €3m in expenses and allowances in 2009.
