LATEST Overnight snow and plummeting temperatures forced the closure of Knock Airport for the day resulting in travel chaos.
Snow forces Knock Airport to close for the day
THE arctic weather conditions which have struck the west has caused travel chaos for thousands of people after Ireland Airport West Knock has forced to close today (Thursday). In a statement released today, the airport authorities explained that due to the plummeting temperature and overnight snowfall the runway conditions are currently unsafe to facilitate the safe operation of flights in and out of the airport. “Ireland West Airport Knock regrets any inconvenience caused but passenger safety is of paramount importance. Ireland West Airport Knock would advise all passengers not to travel to the Airport today and to contact their respective airlines at the below numbers for further information and to make alternative arrangements where necessary,” the statement read. The airport was also forced to close on Tuesday after heavy snowfall and several flights were cancelled on Wednesday because of the weather conditions in the UK. A further travel update is expected to be issued by the airport at 5pm this evening. The adverse weather conditions also forced Bus Éireann to cancel a number of bus routes throughout the county. The 10am Dooagh to Westport service and also the return service from Westport. The 8.20am service from Blacksod to Ballina did not run this morning and the return service was also cancelled. The 12.10am service from Killadoon to Westport was also cancelled along with the return service. Bus Éireann says all the other routes in Mayo are running with delays due to the poor road conditions.
