A TEENAGER charged with stabbing a garda in Westport on August 9 last was further remanded in custody at a sitting of Westport District Court yesterday.
Supt Michael  Murray asked Judge Mary Devins to remand the 16-year-old in custody at St Patrick’s Institution pending DPP directions.
Acceding to the request, Judge Devins directed that the youth appear before the next sitting of the court on Thursday, September 17.
Meanwhile, Supt Michael Murray confirmed to The Mayo News that  Garda Daryl Mullen, who had sustained serious stomach injuries in the attack, was readmitted to Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar on Tuesday last. He said he understood that the 32-year-old garda, a member of the drugs unit in the Mayo Garda Division, was suffering from an infection.
A native of Tuam, County Galway, Garda Mullen was attacked at the entrance to a carpark on James Street, Westport. While on patrol with a number of other gardaí, he had observed what appeared to be a knife handle sticking out from the youth’s armpit.
Subsequently, the youth made several swings at the garda but, by all accounts, only one knife lunge penetrated.
Following a chase the youth was arrested at the nearby South Mall.
He appeared before a sitting of Mullingar District Court the following day charged with assaulting Garda Daryl Mullen causing harm.

However his solicitor Aidan Crowley told Judge Mary Devins at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday last that a consultant psychiatrist at the Central Mental Hospital had informed him that his client was fit to appear before court this week. It was the first time he had appeared before Castlebar District Court since he was charged there on July 8.
