THE new ‘Siúlóid Bhinn Shléibhe’ - Mount Gable Walking Trail in Corr na Móna was recently officially opened by Minister Éamon Ó Cuiv, TD. The walk, developed by the local Community Development Co-Op CDS Teo, was supported through funding from Fáilte Ireland under the previous National Development Plan 2000 - 2006.
Speaking at the launch of the Siúlóid Bhinn Shléibhe on Sunday, Fiona Monaghan (pictured), Local General Manager for Fáilte Ireland in the west, said, “The completion of this new walking route adds to the great variety of outdoor and activity products in Galway, and is particularly welcome to a predominantly rural area, further attracting more visitors to the Corr na Móna area. Fáilte Ireland in the West is delighted to be involved in the development of this walk and with promoting it to visitors.”
There was plenty of entertainment during the opening, starting with a ‘Fun Run’ in the morning at 11am. Ireland’s School of Falconry made an appearance giving spectators the unparalleled experience in the art of flying hawks using beautiful Harris hawks. At the hospitality tent participants had the chance to witness the shearing of Mountain Blackface ewes and the lovely skill of wool spinning, traditional crafts which are still practiced in the local area of Corr na Móna. Local musicians and dancers also provided a feast of entertainment.
All events on the day were free but donations were welcome for the Zambia Housing Project. This project was founded in Joyce Country in January 2007 and since then has completed 12 houses in Kitw e, Zambia with a further 12 under construction.
