Sir Alex sends message as prized possessions arrive

ON the weekend when he celebrated 50 years in football, and saw his side score a goal for every decade of this in their Premier League game against Stoke on Saturday, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson also took time to send a special message to fans in the west of Ireland – as he prepares to send two of his most prized possessions to Mayo this week. From 4pm on Friday, November 21 next, the Premier League and Champions League trophies – arguably the most coveted prizes in club football and which were both won by Manchester United last season – will be flown to Ireland West Airport Knock and escorted to Castlebar, where they will be put on display for all to admire in The Royal Castlebar Theatre and Event Centre. In advance of this, Alex Ferguson has sent a message of apology, as with a busy training and match schedule, he is unable to travel with them. “Hello, Alex Ferguson here from Manchester United,” the message says. “First of all, I’m sorry I am unable to attend the planned charity events in Galway and Castlebar next Friday but I am pleased that the trustees of my charity, the Elizabeth Hardie Ferguson charitable trust fund, with the kind permission of Manchester United of course, have been able to arrange to bring the European Cup and the Premiership trophies over. “I hope that the events give the opportunity for our fans in the West of Ireland to see the trophies that we worked so hard to win last season and any funds raised will go to good causes. “Good luck, enjoy your night. Sorry I can’t be with you,” adds the Scot. The unique occasion on Friday will be used as an opportunity to raise funds for an Autism group called the ‘Action for Life Foundation’, and people are being asked to buy a ticket that will allow them one minute with the trophies to take as many photographs with as many other people as they like. The organisers are hoping that plenty of groups, especially youngsters involved in sport, will avail of this once in a lifetime opportunity. Tickets have been on sale since last Friday morning, and booking is essential. Please ring 094 9023111 – extension 212 for full details.
