Minister to meet with flooding delegation

A DELEGATION of councillors from the south Mayo area, which was afflicted by terrible flooding in 2006 and continues to have much of its land under water, will meet with Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey when he visits the county before Christmas. Fianna Fáil councillor Damian Ryan said he had been informed by the party’s Oireachtas members that Minister Dempsey would meet with a delegation to discuss how to alleviate the flooding problems, which have arisen again after recent heavy rain. “Only last weekend, more families were threatened with being cut off entirely from the road network due to rising flood waters and myself and my two colleagues, Patsy O’Brien and Harry Walsh, are delighted that we can sit down with the Minister and put our case forward. “Basically, the problems which exist with flooding are for the Office of Public Works, under the remit of Minister of State, Martin Mansergh, but the issue of raising these roads falls under Minister Dempsey’s department and we hope he would look favourably on allocating funding to help those who are in danger.”
