TEN students from across Erris have received third-level scholarships each worth €4,000 per annum from the Corrib gas partners.
A total of 57 applications were submitted and reviewed by the Independent Scholarship Board over the summer. To date, there are now 20 students holding Corrib Natural Gas Scholarships in third-level institutions around the country and they will be invited to the second annual awards ceremony which is set to he held in Erris in the New Year.
The Chairman of the Scholarship Board, Mr Seán Staunton, extended the Board’s good wishes to the students and thanked the Corrib gas partners for their support for the scholarships scheme.
“It is a significant commitment by the Corrib gas partners and it will be a considerable help to families who may face difficulty in meeting the expenses that attendance at third-level college can entail,” he said.
Mr Staunton also thanked the school principals, staff and all applicants for their participation in the Programme. He went on to say: “The standard of applications was very high and the Board had a difficult job choosing the ten recipients. All of those who applied are to be congratulated for their efforts.”
Mr Terry Nolan, Managing Director, SEPIL, congratulated the successful applicants. “We are pleased to note that there has been an increased number of applications this year,” said Mr Nolan. He also paid tribute to the members of the Independent Scholarship Board, Seán Staunton, Mrs Breda Holmes, Fr Kevin Hegarty, Ian McAndrew and Tony McGarry, for the interest, experience and commitment they brought to the selection process.
