Knock
A MAJOR fraud operation involving members of An Garda Síochána, the National Immigration Bureau and Revenue and Customs took place in Ireland West Airport Knock last Friday.
The operation, known as ‘Operation Gull’, is a major on-going cross-border investigation which takes place in all the major airports and ports in Ireland by British and Irish authorities to uncover social welfare fraud by asylum seekers and other foreign nationals.
Superintendent Willie Keavney explained that the operation took place all day on Friday and all flights out of Knock were checked by the officials, but no discoveries were made. Operation Gull has been in existence since 2005 and this was the first time the investigation took place in the airport since the full-time Garda and Immigration Unit was set up at the airport.
