‘Over excited’ Rossie abused garda after Mayo match

AN ‘over excited’ Roscommon GAA supporter celebrating his side,s shock win over Mayo in the GAA football championship last month called gardaí ‘w***ers’, before he was arrested close to MacHale Park.
Mark Feehan of 2 Warren Way, Boyle, Co Roscommon, appeared before last week’s sitting of Castlebar District Court where he was charged with a public order offence following an incident outside An Sportlann, Castlebar on May 25.
The court heard that Mr Feehan had travelled to Castlebar for the Connacht Senior Football Championship game between Mayo and Roscommon at MacHale Park.
Inspector Naomi de Rís explained that gardaí had encountered Mr Feehan in an intoxicated state outside An Sportlann at 10.20pm and he was abusive to them calling them ‘w***ers’.
Ms Nicola Daly, solicitor for Mr Feehan, said her client was an electrician who had got over excited following Roscommon’s win and consumed far too much alcohol afterwards. She said he was mortified by his behaviour on the evening and explained that after his arrest he missed his bus back to Roscommon and had to pay €200 for a taxi home.
When asked by Judge Fiona Lydon if he had apologised to the garda involved, Mr Feehan said he wished to apologise to the garda but was told the garda in question had gone to Co Clare to police the visit of President Donald Trump. He said he was ‘genuinely very sorry’ for his behaviour. Judge Lydon agreed to give Mr Feehan the benefit of the Probation Act if he donated €250 to the Garda Benevolent Fund.
