STORM Doris may have eased this morning but not before it wreaked havoc on parts of Mayo and other counties, with an estimated 56,000 ESB customers nationally still without power after high winds and driving rain brought down trees and power lines across the country.
Large ESB faults have been reported in Mayo, Sligo, Galway and Leitrim, while even the eastern seaboard and parts of the midlands did not escape the wrath of the first major storm of 2017, with Dublin, Kildare and Laois all experiencing outages.
Mayo County Council had to clear trees fallen on the road at Rosturk in Mulranny and at Burrishoole Bridge, while diversions were also in place in Glenhest where another tree had fallen onto the road. Crews are busy elsewhere in the county too, with debris and fallen trees, while crews from the fire service and ESB are also hard at work.
The ESB list that there are 16 different locations in Mayo without power, affecting approximately 2,480 customers. Over half of these are in the Castlebar area, where it is reported that 1,257 customers are without power. Flights to and from Ireland West Airport have so far not been affected by the storm.
Met Éireann says that the worst of Storm Doris has passed but vigilance is urged on roads and when people are out and about, as high winds and more rainfall are expected to continue for parts of today and into the weekend.
Martina Hughes, Head of Communications at Mayo County Council, issued the following statement earlier this morning.
“We are urging the general public to be careful as they go about their daily routines. When travelling around the county please be aware of fallen trees and branches, debris on the roads and walk-ways and flooding in certain areas. We would like to ensure the public that Mayo County Council crews and Fire Service have been involved in a clean up operation since early this morning and will continue this work in all affected areas. We request the co-operation of the public until such time as we have successfully completed all necessary works.”
