JOHN B Carney from Meeltrane, Knock, who died suddenly last week, was a true institution in Aghamore GAA circles. It was with deep sadness that his many friends learned of his passing and the sense of loss was palpable around this region of east Mayo.
Down Aghamore way, John B (pictured) was a true institution. He was deeply involved with all grades in the club and helped out on the sideline at nearly all their matches. Everyone had a fondness for John B.
The GAA was such a central part of his life. Away from club matches, he was a passionate supporter of the Mayo team and journeyed to many games with John O’Brien and Larry Warde.
Aghamore GAA Club expressed the shock felt around the Aghamore and Knock region. “The
club came to a standstill when the news trickled through of the death of John B Carney. He was held in high esteem among management and players alike. His gentle soul captured us all and we are feeling a huge loss.
“On behalf of the club we want to extend our heartfelt sympathy to his sister Kitty and the Carney and Murphy families. John B died in grace and will be sadly missed. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dílis.”
John B was a gentle soul and the respect in which he was held was clearly shown by the manner in which so many of the young players from Aghamore and Tooreen turned out for the funeral ceremonies on both days.
In relays they shouldered his coffin, draped in the red and white of Aghamore, from Knock Church to the local cemetery on Saturday afternoon, a fitting and most deserved farewell tribute from the young generation to one of the great stalwarts of the club. Fr Richard Gibbons, PP, celebrated the Funeral Mass and presided at the graveside prayers.
John B, who was predeceased by his brothers Andy and Jimmy, is survived by his sister Kitty Murphy (Ballinlough, Co Roscommon), brother-in-law Tom, nieces, nephews and relatives.
