The south Mayo village of Irishtown is engulfed in grief tonight (Tuesday) after a married couple were found dead in their home this afternoon.
The couple, who are well known in the locality, were found dead by gardaí after 3pm.
The man who died his believed to be in his late 70s and the woman in her mid 60s.
A younger male was found injured at the scene and removed to University Hospital Galway.
Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The scene has been preserved, pending a full technical examination.
“There’s huge shock in the area, people cannot believe it. You don’t get incidents like this in Irishtown. Our hearts go out to the family,” one local told The Mayo News.
The incident took place at their home, a few hundred yards from the Mayo-Galway border. Irishtown is located off the main N17 Claremorris to Tuam road.
