The McHugh family are to take back control of the landmark Welcome Inn Hotel in Castlebar.
The hotel has been in the hands of the family since it first opened in 1962 until last February, when it went into voluntary liquidation.
It has been closed since then but on Friday, June 17 a deal was reached with Bank of Ireland appointed receivers RSM International and Thomas McHugh.
Mr McHugh is the grandson of the late Tom McHugh, who built the hotel in 1962. He’s the son of Mary McHugh and the late Tony McHugh.
Tony and Mary McHugh and Tony’s sister Anne McHugh owned and operated the hotel for many years.
The hotel went into voluntary liquidation on February 19 last with the loss of 20 full-time and 25 part-time jobs.
It is unclear when exactly the hotel will reopen as some legal matters have yet to be finalised but The Mayo News understands there are plans for considerable refurbishment of the 32-bedroom property.
The closure of the hotel was met with dismay locally. It was the scene for many weddings, social events and discos in the town for many years and the venue, on New Antrim Street in the town, is considered a Castlebar institution.
