Eighteen year old faces trial for alleged sexual act with minor

An 18-year-old man will face trial for allegedly engaging in a sexual act with a person under the age of 16



AN 18-year-old man has been sent forward for trial to appear at Castlebar Circuit Court today (Tuesday) for allegedly engaging in a sexual act with a person under 16.
The male, who cannot be named for legal reasons, recently turned 18, meaning that he can now be tried before a judge and jury.
Sergeant Denis Harrington of Westport Garda Station met with the accused before Westport Children’s Court, sitting in Castlebar, on Thursday last for service of the Book of Evidence.
It is alleged that the young man engaged in the sexual act with the person who was under the age of 16 at the time, at a location in Westport in January of last year.
Legal aid was granted.
