Councillor questions need for review of pay and display charges

A Councillor has described pay and display charges as a ‘hot potato’ if Westport continues to fail to introduce them

THE need to carry out a review of pay and display charges was questioned by an Independent councillor if Westport continues to refuse to introduce on-street charges.
The issue of pay and display charges in county towns was described as a ‘hot potato’ by Independent councillor Seamus Weir at last week’s meeting of the SPC on Roads and Transportation.
The SPC was asked to carry out a review of pay and display charges in the county but Cllr Weir questioned the need for a review when the West Mayo Municipal District does not have on-street charges.
The old Westport Town Council refused to introduce on-street charges despite the charges being introduced in Ballina, Castlebar, Ballinrobe and Claremorris. Despite the abolition of the town councils, the new West Mayo Municipal District has also refused to introduce the charges.
Cllr Weir, who is based in the Ballina Municipal District, said that if they were being honest, every area should have pay and display and questioned what they could get out of a review if some areas do not implement the charges.
Cllr Rose Conway-Walsh said the introduction of pay and display charges was one of the legislative rights the municipal districts had and charges should not be a barrier to business. Any charges, she said, should be in consultation with business people who pay rates.
