Traffic calming schemes in Bohola and Breaffy progressing

After campaigns by local residents in both villages, traffic calming schemes in Bohola and Breaffy are progressing.
Construction work is expected to start on a traffic calming scheme, together with the installation of a lower speed limit, through the village of Bohola this September.
Meanwhile the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII, formerly the National Roads Authority) are suggesting that the speed limit on the N60 Castlebar to Claremorris road at Breaffy be reduced from 100kmh to 80kmh.
Mayo County Council Engineer, Ann Sweeney relayed this information to councillors at last Thursday’s meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.
She told councillors four submissions had been made for the planned works at Bohola and she would have a report on these at the May meeting. She thanked the community for their ‘co-operation’ on the proposal and said they are aiming to begin construction in September.
Ms Sweeney told the meeting the council had met with consultants on the design for traffic calming at Breaffy. Locals have called for traffic calming works both on the main N60 and in the village centre, particularly close to the busy local national school.
Ms Sweeney told the meeting the TII were ‘looking at a possible 80kmh’ limit. She said the council is meeting with community representatives and will report back to the councillors then.
