TONY Towey, Aughadeffin, Kilmovee, who died in Mayo University Hospital following a short illness, was widely known throughout his home region of East Mayo and neighbouring parts of Roscommon. He was predeceased by his wife Bernie, nee Charlton from Kiltimagh, five years ago. Tony (84) was the current President of Kilmovee Shamrocks Club.
Bernie and Tony had a great fondness for dancing and won many waltzing competitions in former times. They made many friends on that circuit and, some months after the passing of Bernie, Tony decided to launch a Memorial Cup. With the help of some dedicated friends in the Kilmovee, Urlaur and Gorthaganny areas, the Towey Cup was run on an annual basis in the Brusna Inn with proceeds from the night going to support various causes.
Just a few months ago, Tony presided at the presentation ceremony in the Brusna Inn and was in good form, chatting away with many in the large gathering and extending good wishes to those who received the top prizes on the night.
Farming was his way of life and he was especially noted for his quality work with the tractor and machinery. This led to him being in constant demand over the years to perform various tasks such as ploughing and mowing on neighbouring farms. Tony took a gentle pride in work well done and he was regarded as top class at his farming work.
In his young years he played football with Kilmovee and retained a great interest in GAA matters all his life. He was a passionate supporter of Kilmovee Shamrocks and was the serving President of the club at the time of his death.
Tony was a fine community man who was always there to lend a helping hand when the need arose. He enjoyed the Heritage nights in Kilmovee Community Centre and often joined in the entertainment at these special occasions.
Neatness and tidiness were quintessential traits associated with Tony. Punctuality was another that he held dear. He was kind and gracious in his dealings with people and it was easy to feel at home in his company.
A man of strong faith, he was a great supporter of church activities in his home parish and was dedicated to the Christian ethos which shaped his life.
Tony will be sadly missed by so many people who knew him over the decades. Condolences are tendered to his family circle and friends at this time.
Reposing took place at the Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen, with removal to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Kilmovee. Interment took place in Urlaur cemetery following Mass of the Resurrection.
He is survived by his son Jerry, grandson Scott, brothers John (Birmingham) and Fr Dominic (Glasgow), sisters Una O’Donoghue (Dublin) and Dolores Charlton (Frenchpark), Jerry’s partner Jane, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
