Former Mayo TD Jerry Cowley will stand in this year’s General Election.
The Mulranny-based GP confirmed to The Mayo News this evening that he is putting his name forward as an Independent candidate under the ‘No Doctor, No Village’ banner.
Dr Cowley will officially announce the news tomorrow (Tuesday) at a ‘No Doctor, No Village’ meeting in Mulranny. He told The Mayo News he made his decision over the weekend, after considering it for a number of weeks.
“I’ve been under a lot of pressure to run because of the way things are and people feel things are getting more desperate. People can only take so much.
“If people like me don’t go forward, things won’t change. It’s GPs like me that are at the coalface in communities. I’m putting myself forward and I feel that it’s important to do that,” said Dr Cowley.
We broke the story earlier this month that he was considering standing under the ‘No Doctor, No Village’ banner, whose targeted aim is to protect and enhance medical care in rural areas.
