A man has been charged with assault causing harm following a violent incident in the grounds of a Claremorris church
A MAN has been charged with assault causing harm following a violent incident in which another man was stabbed in the grounds of a Claremorris church last January.
Terry Maughan (33) of 21 Grattan Avenue, Claremorris, appeared before Castlebar District Court last week and was charged with assault causing harm and the production of an article during a violent incident outside St Colman’s Church, Dalton Street, on January 16, 2015. Mr Maughan was arrested on August 23, 2015. Inspector Mandy Gaynor told Judge Mary Devins that the DPP had directed trial on indictment and the case was adjourned until October 6 for the service of the book of evidence.
The incident for which Mr Maughan is charged occurred last January, when friends and family of the late Owen Maughan were congregating at the church for his Month’s Mind Mass.
It is alleged that a row broke out between two men and as the row intensified, local parish priest Fr Peter Gannon was left with no other choice but to lock the doors of the church.
One of the men involved was stabbed in his side. He was later brought to Mayo General Hospital, where he required surgery for his injuries.
