Concern over Baxter job losses

A Castlebar councillor has expressed concern over recent job losses at Baxter.
Cllr Michael Kilcoyne has decried the loss of in excess of 100 temporary and fixed contract positions at the Castlebar-based pharmaceutical multi-national.
Many of the workers were let go in recent weeks after their contracts finished and were not renewed.
“It is very serious. This is well-paid employment and while they might be temporary or contract employment, they are jobs nonetheless and their spending power locally is also affected. For a town like Castlebar this is the equivalent of Galway losing 1,000 jobs.
“Now there are less jobs in Mayo than when the Government came to office. That is a worry. Numbers on the Live Register only show part of the story. The number of people employed highlights how many may have emigrated as well,” he added.
