Lottery win hits Mayo again

A lottery jackpot of €1 million was won in Balla on Monday last with a Claremorris farmer claiming the prize.

Farmer becomes overnight millionaire with Lotto win

A farmer from the Claremorris area became the latest Mayo millionaire last week after his Quick Pick numbers came up.
The delighted farmer wasted no time in collecting the cool €1 million jackpot after his Quick Pick numbers came up in the March 2 Daily Million game. He travelled to the National Headquarters on Wednesday last after finding the ticket in his car.
The married man, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought the €1.50 Quick Pick in Centra in Balla, but left the ticket in his unlocked car.
He looked up the lotto numbers on the National Lottery website and then went out to his car to check the ticket.
Speaking to The Mayo News, Roche’s Centra owner Danny Roche, said there was ‘great excitement’ in Balla following the news of the win.
“I was just closing up the shop at 10pm on the Monday night and the National Lottery rang to say we had sold a Daily Millions winning ticket. The Claremorris man heard about the win on Tuesday and claimed it on Wednesday,” explained Mr Roche.
The shop owner said he still does not know the identity of the winner and said the shop had experienced an increase in lotto sales following the win.
The Balla store has previously sold three lottery jackpots, four of its customers have appeared on Winning Streak, three customers on Telly Bingo, along with many other smaller wins.
“I suppose we are lucky enough and hope this luck continues for our customers,” said Roche.
It has been reported that the Claremorris winner has plans to go on holidays, buy a new car and put his children through education.
This has been the third big jackpot in the county in the past year, with a €15 million jackpot claimed in Castlebar in March last year and the unfortunate unclaimed €2.9 million jackpot in Claremorris last November.
