Kilmovee centenarian dies

KATHLEEN Shiel from Clooniron, Kilmovee, who died last week, was in her 101st year. Kathleen witnessed many huge changes in Irish life and society during her ten decades on this earth.
A native of Kilrickle in South Galway, she was daughter of Joseph and Celia Cunniffe. She worked for a time in Loughrea in her young years before emigrating to Manchester. It was there she met her husband to be, Michael Shiel from Clooniron, Kilmovee.
They moved home to Kilmovee where they made their home over the years. Michael and Kathleen raised a family of three daughters. The year 1995 was a sad year for the family with the passing of Michael and also their daughter Patricia (Scully).
Kathleen was a popular and highly regarded member of the Kilmovee community down through the years. She enjoyed good health almost to the very end and was joined by family and friends for a major party to honour her centenary on November 18. She was blessed with a brilliant memory and could enthrall people with her stories of yore and times gone by.
Removal was from Moran’s Funeral Home to Kilmovee Church with burial in the local cemetery after Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr Vincent Sherlock, Fr Michael Quinn and Fr Farrell Cawley.
She is survived by her daughters Margaret Bell and Ita Cullen, in-laws, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, neighbours and friends. Condolences are tendered to her family and friends at this time.
