WELL it is Westport’s most internationally recognisable bar and with the name of Chieftain Matt Molloy over the door, there is no surprise that it has just won the IMRO, ‘Best Live Music Venue in Connacht’ award for 2014.
Since the pub first opened in 1988 its unique hallmark has been its dedication to a broad range of traditional music – played by both globally famous and local musicians. And with the flute maestro himself regularly enjoying a pint or joining in at sessions, it is no surprise that it has become a musical mecca for tourists.
Speaking after last week’s ceremony, James Molloy, who accepted the award on behalf of the family and staff, said: “We are delighted to win the IMRO award for Best Live Music Venue in Connacht. This award is a very special one as we were nominated by musicians and other IMRO members to get shortlisted into the last five venues. From there, it was up to the public to vote for us. We would like to thank everyone for taking the time to vote.
“We would also like to thank people for continuing to support our events. There are concerts, singer/songwriter sessions, a folk club and set dancing classes regularly and also traditional Irish music sessions every night throughout the year,” James Molloy continued.
Overall winner of the IMRO Live Music Venue of the Year Awards 2014 was Dolan’s of Limerick. Other Regional category winners were, Vicar Street, Dublin and Cleere’s Bar and Theatre, Kilkenny (Leinster); University Concert Hall, Limerick (Munster); Voodoo Venue, Letterkenny (Ulster).
The finalists at the seventh annual awards were chosen by over 10,000 IMRO members.
Speaking at the ceremony, Keith Donald, IMRO Chairman said: “This is our annual chance to give a really big thank-you to promoters and venues across the country. The work they do is invaluable, as young bands and artists can’t build up an audience without them.”
