BALLYCROY singer Nicola Lynch wowed the judges on the fourth instalment of The Voice of Ireland recently with her impressive performance of Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’.
The 19 year old rapped her way through to the next round when judges Una Foden and Rachel Stevens both turned their chairs.
Speaking to The Mayo News about the experience, Nicola said she was delighted that both Una and Rachel turned their chairs. In the end Nicola chose Una as her mentor.
“I chose Una because I thought she would get me more. She’s the nicest ever and has been giving me tips on what to wear to help me feel comfortable on stage,” explained the singer.
She now goes through to the ‘Battle stages’ of the competition which will air on RTÉ One in the coming weeks. Nicola described the next stage as ‘tough’ and ‘a lot of pressure’.
“I told my family not to come up to the battle stages because I didn’t want the pressure of them being there. Everybody is delighted with me being in it and everyone in the parish is behind me,” she said, adding that she was ‘overwhelmed’ by the entire experience.
The Battle Stages sees the four coaches divide their team into duos and sets them a song they must sing together.
Asked if she got to put her own rapping twist to her song, Nicola explained that unfortunately she didn’t but that she did sing her chosen song with a difference.
The coaches will choose only one person from the duo to proceed to the live shows. The outright winner will win a recording contract with Universal Studios.
Everyone in Ballycroy, including Nicola’s nine brothers and five sisters will be rooting for her to be crowned ‘The Voice of Ireland’.  The show airs on RTÉ One every Sunday at 6.30pm.
